Manchester football weekend: Old Trafford and the Etihad
Manchester is the only English city with two of the Premier League’s biggest clubs. Manchester United play at Old Trafford, south-west of the city centre, and Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in east Manchester. Both are reached by the Metrolink tram, so a weekend can easily include a match and the city itself.

Manchester Airport has its own railway station with trains to Manchester Piccadilly, and a Metrolink tram line into the city. From London, trains run from Euston to Manchester Piccadilly.
Getting to the grounds
Old Trafford: The Old Trafford Metrolink stop (Altrincham line) is about a 7-minute walk; Exchange Quay (Eccles line) and Trafford Bar are about 10 minutes away. The old Manchester United Football Ground rail halt is not in use, so plan on the tram. After the final whistle, Wharfside is the stop to use for trams back towards the city centre.
Etihad Stadium: Trams on the Metrolink East Manchester line stop at Etihad Campus, immediately north of the stadium, and at Velopark on the south-east side. Manchester Piccadilly is a 20-minute walk along a signposted, stewarded route.
Areas to base yourself
These are the areas most visitors choose as a base for the weekend:
- City centre (Piccadilly, Deansgate, Northern Quarter, Spinningfields): the most choice of restaurants and bars, with trams to both grounds and trains from Piccadilly to the airport.
- Salford Quays and MediaCityUK: on the canal close to Old Trafford, handy for a United match and linked to the city centre by tram.
- Ancoats and New Islington: east of the centre, a walkable or short tram ride from the Etihad.
