About Hull City
Hull City were founded on 28 June 1904 in a city where rugby league was the dominant sport, and were admitted to the Football League a year later. For most of the 20th century they moved between the second, third and fourth tiers; they were runners-up in the first Associate Members' Cup final in 1984. The club left Boothferry Park for the MKM Stadium in 2002.
The modern era has been a run of promotions. Hull reached the Premier League for the first time by winning the 2008 Championship play-off final against Bristol City, returned in 2013, and reached their first FA Cup final in 2014, losing 3–2 to Arsenal after extra time. They came back again via the 2016 play-off final, dropped to the third tier in 2020 and won League One at the first attempt. In May 2026 they beat Middlesbrough 1–0 in the Championship play-off final at Wembley to return to the top flight after nine years away. The colours are black and amber, hence the nickname the Tigers. Hull's local rivalries are the Humber derbies with Grimsby Town and Scunthorpe United. One of the club's most celebrated managers was Raich Carter, who led them to the Third Division North title in 1948–49, after which they spent seven seasons in the second tier.
