About Brighton & Hove Albion
Brighton & Hove Albion were founded in 1901 and played in the Southern League before being elected to the Football League in 1920. Their best-known day out in the old First Division era was the 1983 FA Cup final, which they lost to Manchester United after a replay. The late 1990s were the club's hardest period: they came close to dropping out of the Football League in 1997 and spent 14 years without a permanent home ground.
The turnaround began with successive promotions in 2001 and 2002, a move to the Falmer Stadium in 2011, and promotion to the Premier League in 2016–17, ending a 34-year absence from the top flight. In 2022–23 Brighton finished sixth, their highest top-flight finish, and qualified for the Europa League, their first European campaign. The club is nicknamed the Seagulls, usually plays in blue-and-white stripes, and counts Crystal Palace as its fiercest rival, a rivalry that grew in the 1970s.
